It’s that time of year again – when things go “bump” in the night, eerie, flickering shadows of faces carved out of pumpkins appear, and ghosts and ghouls roam restlessly through our realm. It’s Halloween, of course! We’re about to give you some fun game ideas that are perfect for this, the spookiest of holidays. Here are five fun Halloween games suitable for all ages:
-
Popping Pumpkins
What You’ll Need
- Packet of orange balloons
- Black marker pen
- Assorted candies
Preparation
- Place your assorted candies in a few of the orange balloons before you blow them up
- Blow up the balloons
- Draw scary faces on the balloons using your black marker pen
- Hide the balloons throughout your house and/or garden
How to Play
Very simple – inform the game’s participants that there are a bunch of “pumpkin” balloons spread around, some of which have special treats inside of them! All they need to do is pop the balloon when they find it.
-
Ghost Bowling
What you’ll need
- A multi-pack of kitchen towels or toilet paper
- Black marker pen
- A ball of your choice (tennis ball, golf ball, etc.)
Preparation
- Draw eyes and/or ghostly faces on your rolls of kitchen towels or toilet paper
- Stack your rolls on top of each other in a pyramid-shaped fashion
How to Play
The aim of the game is to knock as many ghost bowling “pins” (rolls) over using a ball of your choice. Maybe you can play a best-out-of-three or best-out-of-five game with the participants!
-
Halloween Ring Toss
What You’ll Need
- Witch’s hat
- Glowsticks
Preparation
- Connect the ends of each glowstick to make rings out of them
- Position the witch’s hat in the center of the room
How to Play
Give each participant a glowstick ring. Each player then attempts, in turn, to throw their glowstick ring on top of the witch’s hat (the witch’s hat replaces the usual cones for that Halloween twist). The player who manages to land their glowstick on top of the witch’s hat over a series of rounds is the winner!
-
Ghost-ghost-witch
What You’ll Need
- White sheet for each player
- Scissors
- Witch’s hat
Preparation
- Cut two holes in each of the white sheets to form eye sockets
- Determine which participant is going to be the witch
How to Play
All the participants, dressed in their ghost costumes, sit around in a circle. Another participant, standing, is “it” (the witch). The witch proceeds around the circle, tapping on the heads of the ghosts saying “ghost” each time they do. When they get to a player they want to make “it”, they place the witch’s hat on their head and say “witch!”. The new witch has to chase down the old witch, at which point a new round starts. Play until you’re tired or get bored – whichever comes first!
-
Apple Bobbing
What You’ll Need
- A big container, such as a plastic washtub
- A source of water
- Two dozen apples
Preparation
- Fill the container with water
- Place the apples on the top of the water. They should float
How to Play
Apple bobbing is traditionally played on Halloween because of its symbolic ties to the harvest. The aim of the game is for players to grab as many apples as they can using just their teeth. The player that manages to grab the most apples is the winner.
